📢 Ontario Employment Law & Workplace Updates – May 2025

Updated: 1 hour ago

Ontario’s employment landscape is rapidly evolving in 2025, with new legislative updates and workforce developments that every employer and professional should know. Here's a breakdown of the most important changes happening right now:

✅ New Employee Information Requirements – Effective July 1, 2025

Starting July 1, 2025, all Ontario employers with 25 or more employees must provide new hires with specific written information before or shortly after their first day. This includes:

  • Employer's legal and operating name

  • Business contact information

  • Initial work location

  • Starting wage or commission

  • Pay schedule (pay period & pay day)

  • Expected hours of work

🛑 Note: These rules do not apply to temporary help agency employees.

🧼 Washroom Maintenance Law – Effective July 1, 2025

Employers and constructors must ensure workplace washrooms are:

  • Clean and sanitary

  • Documented: Cleaning schedules must be logged

  • Visible: As of Jan 1, 2026, cleaning logs for the last two cleanings must be posted near the facility or made accessible digitally (with instructions provided to workers)

🛠️ WSIB Labour Disruption Halts Appeals

As of May 22, 2025, over 3,600 unionized WSIB workers have initiated rolling strikes after failed contract talks. As a result:

  • Appeals are suspended

  • Objection deadlines are paused

  • Scheduled hearings are postponed and will be rescheduled post-disruption

Employers should monitor updates from WSIB and be prepared for administrative delays.

📉 Job Cuts Making Headlines

  • Canada Revenue Agency (CRA): Cutting approx. 280 jobs in Ottawa and nearby areas

  • Booz Allen Hamilton: Announced a 7% workforce reduction (~2,500 jobs), primarily affecting their civil sector

What This Means for Employers

Ontario’s labour laws and employment dynamics are becoming increasingly complex. These changes reflect a broader shift toward transparency, safety, and employee rights. Businesses must stay agile, informed, and compliant.
